Quaker farmland below Allamuchy Mountain
Allamuchy lies just across the county line, the one town on this list that is in Warren County. Quakers surveyed land here in 1715 and kept a meeting going for about a century. Later the Rutherfurd family held large farming estates, and their house, Rutherfurd Hall, was finished in 1906. Allamuchy Township today mixes that older landscape with newer housing.
Newer houses often have fireplaces of the factory-built kind, set in a framed chase with a metal chimney, or gas fireplaces with their own venting. They are simpler than a masonry chimney but they are not maintenance-free.
Closer to the mountain, houses sit among trees on sloping lots, and a wood stove or insert is common. Those chimneys see heavy use and need the same yearly sweep as any in Sussex County.
Newer fireplaces still need a yearly look
A factory-built wood fireplace is swept just as a masonry one is, with a brush sized to its metal flue. The refractory panels lining the firebox are checked for cracks wide enough to need replacing.
Gas fireplaces do not make creosote, but their vents can be blocked by nests and their logs and burners collect dust and soot. A yearly check keeps them burning cleanly.
On the roof, the chase cover and termination cap are looked over. A rusted chase cover is the most common source of water damage on these systems.
