Two dozen lakes, and houses built around them
Byram Township calls itself the Township of Lakes, with roughly two dozen lakes and ponds inside its borders. Cranberry Lake is the oldest of the large ones. It was made in 1830 as a reservoir to feed the Morris Canal, and homes later grew up around its shore.
The Byram side of Lake Mohawk began as a summer resort before its houses were winterized, and Forest Lakes is another community built around the water. Allamuchy Mountain State Park borders the township, so much of it is thick woodland.
Lakeside air is damp, and a chimney near the water rarely dries out fully. Dampers rust, mortar softens, and the smell of a sooty flue is strongest on humid summer days when air sinks down the chimney into the house.
Dealing with damp and odour
A thorough sweep removes the creosote that causes most fireplace odour. The smoke shelf, which collects soot and rainwater, is cleaned out fully instead of being left as it often is.
The damper is worked and checked for rust. If it no longer seals, cold air and smells pass freely into the room, and a top-sealing damper at the crown may be the better fix.
Where a lake house has a stove or insert connected to an old cottage flue, the liner is checked closely. It is the part most likely to be undersized or missing.
