The valley on Newton's doorstep
Hampton Township was carved out of the old Newton Township in 1864 and still curves around the town on two sides. It lies in the Kittatinny Valley, with open farmland in the middle and wooded ridges toward the edges.
Several small lakes sit inside its borders, among them Lake Kemah, Paulins Kill Lake and Little Swartswood Lake. Crandon Lakes, which the township shares with Stillwater, is a community of its own. Houses around lakes like these are often compact and close to the trees, with a fireplace or stove doing a good part of the heating.
Shade and damp are the common thread. A chimney that sits under a tree canopy dries slowly after rain, grows moss on its north side and collects needles and leaves on its crown.
What gets checked on a shaded chimney
The sweep itself is the same everywhere. The flue is brushed, the smoke shelf is cleared and the soot is vacuumed away from the hearth.
On a lake or woodland house the top of the chimney gets extra attention. Leaf litter is cleared from the crown, the cap screen is checked for clogging, and the mortar is looked at for the soft, crumbling joints that constant damp produces.
If the flue has no cap, that is usually the first thing worth fixing. It keeps the next season's leaves and the next family of squirrels out.
