Farm country, and houses that heat with wood
Fredon is one of the quietest corners of Sussex County. It was known as Coursen's Corners when its first post office opened in 1800, and for ninety years a railway through the Paulinskill Valley carried its farm produce toward New York. That rail bed is now a walking trail, and Fredon Township remains mostly fields, woodlots and scattered houses.
Homes here are spread out, and a good number burn wood as a main source of heat instead of an occasional comfort. A stove that runs day and night from November to March puts far more smoke through its chimney than a fireplace lit on weekends.
Long, slow overnight burns are the hardest on a flue. With the air turned down, the fire smoulders, the smoke stays cool and creosote forms quickly.
Sweeping a chimney that works all winter
A hard-working stove chimney is brushed with tools matched to its liner. Stainless liners get a poly brush that will not scratch them. Clay-tile flues take a stiffer wire brush.
Glazed creosote, the hard, tarry kind, does not come off with a brush alone. When it is found, you are told so, along with what it will take to remove it safely.
For homes that burn several cords a year, a mid-season check is sensible on top of the yearly sweep. It takes little time and it catches heavy buildup before it becomes a hazard.
