Old hamlets and a generation of newer homes
Green Township takes its name from Ephraim Green, who settled near Greendell in 1770. For most of its history it was a handful of farming hamlets, and no state highway runs through it even now.
The township grew fastest between 1960 and 1980, so alongside the old houses in Tranquility and Huntsville there are homes typical of those decades: colonials, split-levels and ranches. Houses of that kind often have a brick fireplace in the family room. Others have a factory-built fireplace with a metal chimney inside a framed, sided chase.
Those two systems age differently. A brick chimney of that era is now old enough to need its crown and mortar looked at. A prefab chimney has a metal chase cover on top, and when that rusts through, water runs down inside the chase where nobody sees it.
Masonry fireplaces and prefab ones
A masonry fireplace is swept with rods and a brush from the firebox or the roof, and the smoke chamber above the damper is cleaned by hand.
A factory-built fireplace needs a lighter touch. Its metal flue is swept with a brush that fits its exact diameter, and the firebox panels, which crack with age, are checked while the work is under way.
Either way, the top gets a look. On a prefab chimney that means the chase cover and the cap, which fail far more often than the flue does.
