A big farming township under the mountain
Frankford covers about thirty-five square miles, which makes it one of the larger townships in the county. Settlers were farming here around 1700, raising livestock and planting apple orchards. Frankford Township was formed in 1797 and is still largely agricultural.
Its northern edge runs up against Kittatinny Mountain, where Culver Lake and Lake Owassa sit in natural basins below the ridge. Homes there are more exposed to wind off the ridge and to colder, snowier weather than the valley floor gets.
Wind is a real factor for chimneys on high or open ground. Gusts can push smoke back down a flue, and a chimney that is short relative to the roof ridge or nearby trees will struggle to draw on blustery days.
Draft problems on exposed sites
A clean flue is the starting point for good draft, so the sweep comes first. Soot narrows the passage and roughens the walls, and both slow the smoke.
If smoke still spills into the room on windy days, the chimney top is the place to look. A wind-resistant cap often solves it. Sometimes the flue needs to be extended so it stands clear of the roof.
For farmhouses with an outdoor wood boiler or a second stove in a workshop, each chimney is treated as its own job. They build up at different rates.
